DESCRIPTION
On this Afro-Cuban-Cape Verdean dance holiday, you will be taught by top professional Cuban teachers and local Cape Verdean professional dancers, teachers and musicians providing you with individual tuition and plenty of attention to detail. Afro-Cuban -Cape Verdean music is also a key feature of the trip. Cape Verde has a strong cultural heritage rooted from African (with influences from African sources), rooted on our mother land AFRICA, and there will be plenty of opportunity to see live music and dance events and performances during the holiday and also to learn more about the African influences in Cuban as well as Cape Verdean culture including santeria religion. There is a wide range of live music and dance venues which offer different entertainment every night of the week, including the live museum, so will be able to practise what you have been learning each day.
Daily Afro-Cuban dance and percussion lessons are organised in small groups. Dance classes will focus on Afro-Cuban ( Orishas, Arara, Palo) , some of the main orishas such as Shango, Yemaya and Ochun, Rumba ( Yambu, Guaguanco, Columbia) Funana, Coladera and we will of course have classes in Salsa and Kizomba. Live percussion is provided for some of those classes. There will also be workshops in percussion and rhythm to help you understand the roots and rhythms of the key elements of traditional Afro-Cuban and Cape Verdean music, plus 2 afternoon workshops for dance styling or percussion or Spanish/ Portuguese or Creole language (you choose which ones to do). Classes are suitable for absolute beginners to advanced level as participants will be put into smaller groups according to their level.
Accommodation is arranged in carefully selected B&B which will provide you with a real insight into Cape Verdean life, delicious home cooked meals, a chance to practise your Creole :-) and a home away from home with all the independence you need.
Accompanied nights out to top local live bands and events, cultural visits and excursions and plenty of time to relax and recharge your batteries too, all in a relaxed and tropical Caribbean atmosphere. A holiday you will never forget!
Performing
Coinciding with the celebration of Oya and Yemaya orishas we will show the locals what Afro-Cuban dance is about, we will organise a performance course before leaving the UK, if you are coming for another country don't worry, that is when the internet works :-) We also have a few hours to practice when we are in Cape Verde. Unlike our other dace cultural holidays, this trip will focus primarily on the influence that Africa has in both cultures ( CUBA & CAPE VERDE) including popular dances such as Salsa, Zouk and Kizomba.
*early bird offer* – book a place on our January 2017 CUBAinCapeVerde festival holiday by 30 November 2016 to secure the early bird price of £599 per person. A deposit of £150 is required to book your place.
